March 2014 - Nic Petan was announced to the WHL 1st All-Star Team in the Western Conference. He finished the regular season with 113 points (35 goals and 78 assists) in 63 games. Earlier in January/February, Petan went on a 16-game scoring streak, scoring 33 points (12 goals, 21 assists). Right now he has three points in three playoff games as the Winterhawks are leading 3-0 over the Vancouver Giants. -Kevin Won

March 2014 - Nic Petan has continued to produce strongly and is second in WHL scoring with 108 points in 59 games. It seems the departure of Seth Jones and Ty Rattie has not hindered Petan's ability to rack up the points. The small forward continues to have a tireless work ethic and oozes skill. Expect him to challenge a spot for the Jets in two or three years. -Kevin Won

December 2013 - Nic Petan is one of 13 forwards selected to the Canadian Under-20 World Junior roster for the upcoming Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Sutter is expected to ice Petan in one of the top two center ice positions so he will have the chance to play with some top end prospects and post good offenisve numbers. Brendan Ross

September 2013 - Petan was among the first cuts in the Jets' training camp this year and was sent back to Portland to develop his game. He only played in one preseason game, tallying a single assist. Management doesn't want rush his development and although one of the most dynamic players of the recent 2013 draft, it was the right decision. He'll be among the leaders in the WHL again. -Kevin Won

May 2013 - A potential first round selection at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Nic Petan is the co-recipient of the CHL Top Scorer award with linemate Brendan Leipsic (Nashville Predators). The teammates each recorded 120 points to lead all three CHL leagues and Petan's 46 goals fell just a few shy of crossing the 50-goal plateau. Nic Petan was a prospect who substantially improved his production this season and his 120 points lead all draft eligible skaters. He is a bit undersized but his scoring prowess should see this hard-working forward drafted inside the top 30 picks. Brendan Ross

March 2013 - Portland's Nicolas Petan and Brendan Leipsic tied for the WHL scoring league with 120 points, a feat that has improved Petan's 2013 NHL Draft stock substantially. Petan's admirable work ethic and non-stop motor helps to subside the concerns surrounding his below-average body size. His ability to put up points through skill, hard work and determination should see Petan drafted inside the top-50 for the upcoming 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross

February 2013 –  Nicolas Petan is lighting up the WHL, he has 40 goals and 60 assists for 100 points in only 58 games so far this year. He has an astounding plus-63 rating playing for the top ranked Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Petan has ultra-slick hands and a deceptively hard shot, his skating is good for his age but it’s his change of pace speed that impresses scouts the most. He can go from a stand still to full speed in a matter of seconds; that enables him to join and start rushes with his skilled line-mates Ty Rattie (STL) and Brendan Leipsic (NSH). As a rookie last season Petan was forced to play a fourth-line grinder type role with a stacked Portland team that made it all the way to the WHL Championship. This provided him the chance to learn the defensive side of the game. But during this campaign he has been given the opportunity to play on the top line and show off his elite level passing skills and vision. Seth Brisendine

Fantasy Outlook: B-

Petan has shown that he can score and produce at the junior level despite his lack of size. The only challenge ahead of him is to show scouts and GMs that he is the real deal and can use his offensive abilities at the top levels of hockey. Look for Petan to be drafted late in the first round or early second round in this upcoming draft.
