Petr Straka, RW

Hometown: Plzen, Czech Republic

Drafted: 2010 by Columbus, 55th overall

Jan 2015 - The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled Straka and he will make his NHL debut in place of the suspended Zac Rinaldo and ill Michael Raffl in the team's first game back from the All-Star break. Straka is projected to play on a line with center Ryan White (also just recalled) and winger Wayne Simmonds. The quick forward has recorded 11 goals and 17 points in 39 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. At times flashy, Straka is a streaky player that can either stand out or disappear completely. While the assignment will likley be short-lived, the club will be able to see how he responds against NHL talent as he has been gaining momentum in the American League with goals in his last three contests. Zach Hopkins

April 2013 - Flyers have signed 20-year-old Petr Straka, formerly a second round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 55 games, Straka posted 41 goals and 41 assists for 82 points for the Baie-Comeau Drakker. He has dominated the QMJHL playoffs producing eight goals and 18 points through eight games. Straka enters a Flyers organization that is relatively shallow so he will be presented with a good opportunity. Brendan Ross

February 2013 - Straka was named the QMJHL Third Star of the Week (ending February 10th) after sniping two goals and nine points for his  Baie-Comeau Drakkar team. Brendan Ross

January 2013- Straka has finally started to show why he was an NHL draft pick. He is having his strongest season to date with 27 goals in 34 games.  -Derek LeBlanc

November 2012- The unsigned Czech has already matched last year’s point total in only 20 games. Straka is tied for the league lead with 21 goals and has been a major factor in Baie-Comeau’s early success. If he keeps up this pace, he could generate some interest at the next level. - Derek LeBlanc

September 2012- Straka’s rights were traded from Rimouski to Baie-Comeau. He will play in the QMJHL as an overage player.

July, 2012 - Columbus elected not to offer Straka a contract and he went back in the draft. After going undrafted, it is clear that his outlook for an NHL career is grim. - Dobber

May, 2012 – Petr Straka is a quick winger with a good pair of hands, two attributes that are essential to becoming a solid NHL player.  However, he has a tendency to disappear at times.  Although his defensive game has improved, it may not be enough to land him a bottom-six role in the NHL.  After a successful rookie campaign with the Rimouski Oceanic where he posted 64 points in 62 games, Straka followed up with two disappointing years with just 25 points in 41 games in 2010-11 and 37 points in 54 games in 2011-12.  His outlook is not promising at the moment but there is a dire need for scoring in Columbus which works to Straka’s advantage.

Fantasy Outlook: C

Straka does have upside, but there is lots of risk and needs additional seasoning.
