Observations:

July 2014- The most important part of Stefan Matteau's 2013-2014 season for the Albany Devils was staying out of trouble.  With character questions being asked after his immature behavior in the past, Matteau turned in a solid season for the club with 26 points in 67 games played.  While displaying a more mature attitude off the ice, he continued his rugged physical play on the ice tacking on 66 penalty minutes.  Still only 20-years-old he still has plenty of time to develop his offensive abilities while filling out his already impressive physical frame.  With the New Jersey Devils possibly letting Ryan Carter and Steve Bernier go via free agency, they could be searching for bottom six grit and tenacity with Stefan Matteau fitting the need perfectly.  Michael Riggi

April 2013 - Not the greatest news coming out of the Stefan Matteau camp after the 2012 first round selection was released by his QMJHL team, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, after reacting to a third period benching by leaving the team. Character flags are raised immediately with Matteau especially since the assistant coach of the team was his father, former NHLer Sephane Matteau. Matteau's "unacceptable behaviour" will be closely monitored by the Devils' organization but this is certainly not promising news for a prospect who has been already labelled with question marks before this incident. Brendan Ross

December 2012 - Matteau was a late (and somewhat surprising) cut from the USA WJC team. It's quite possible that his 14 penalty minutes in the final tune-up game, a loss to Finland, may have sealed his fate. USA coach Phil Housley has been stressing the importance of playing with discipline. Rich Dillon

December 2012 - Stefan Matteau was one of the 27 American players named to the USA Preliminary roster for the upcoming 2013 World Junior Championships. In his first QMJHL season, Matteau is chugging along at just under a point-per-game pace (26GP-14G-9A-23P) for Blainville-Boisbriand and could offer USA some physicality and net-front presence.  Brendan Ross

October 2012 – Matteau despite scoring eight points in his first 13 QMJHL games has been suspended one-game by his coaching staff (his father serves as Assistant Coach) after several undisciplined plays that resulted in two league suspensions. Matteau continues to show immaturity on the ice as he attempts to balance his rough-and-tumble style with legal physical play. His latest suspension came from a checking from behind major penalty. Brendan Ross

June 2012 – Stefan Matteau, the son of former New York Ranger Stephane Matteau, was selected 29th overall by the New Jersey Devils after the team decided to make their selection rather than forfeited their 1st round pick. Brendan Ross

May 2012 – Matteau is a big burly hard hitting winger with the feistiness and grit teams covet in power forwards. His style of play is somewhat reminiscent of Milan Lucic in the way that he intimidates the opposition but teams will be hoping that he develops his offensive game more, Matteau owns a good net presence game and a good shot that makes him dangerous inside of the scoring area. Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: B

Matteau’s modest offensive skills combined with his ability to agitate the opposition could become a valuable commodity in leagues that reward penalty minutes.
