Observations:
May 2013- Boy did a change of scenery do wonders for Alan Quine. After consistently posting in the minus column for the woeful Peterborough Petes and Kingston Frontenacs, Quine turned things around playing for the OHL Eastern Conference Champion Belleville Bulls posting a plus-29 rating in only 28 games. Quine clearly showed that when surrounded with a supporting cast he can cause havoc for the opposition. Not only was his plus-29 rating impressive he also saw his points-per-game climb from an even 1.00 with the Petes to a 1.46 with his Hometown Bulls. Quine's regular season success was a big reason Belleville was able to win their conference but he really elevated his game once playoffs came around especially when Belleville needed it most, scoring five goals in the last four games to help the Bulls fight to a game seven against the powerful Barrie Colts. Quine finished up his postseason in a tie for the team lead with eight goals and totals of 8G-7A-15PTS in 17 games played. Look for the quick footed Quine to be in Red Wings camp come next September but eventually make his way to their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids where he will look to build off his successful campaign in Belleville and continue to develop in to the two way forward Detroit demands. February 2013: Although Alan Quine’s OHL career didn’t get off to the best start, he has really blossomed into a solid prospect for the Detroit Red Wings. Quine scored just 11 goals in his rookie season with the Kingston Frontenacs, but doubled that production the following season with the Peterborough Petes (22 goals in 12 less games). In his 2012-13 campaign, the Ottawa native is averaging 1.29 points-per-game, and since his trade from Kingston has been one of the hottest players in the OHL. He has 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in 12 games for the Belleville Bulls thus far, holding a plus-13 with just four penalty minutes. Quine is a prototypical Red Wings prospect; he’s smart, self-controlled, hard working and is a great distributor of the puck, perfect for a Detroit franchise that has always prided itself on puck-possession. While Quine has really improved his play away from the puck since his rookie season, he still needs to focus on having a consistent presence in the defensive third if he’s going to crack an NHL lineup in the next few years. Quine’s work ethic and ability to learn quickly make him a real coach’s player and, again, a great fit for Motown.
Fantasy Outlook: C+ Already has a pro work ethic. Quine would benefit greatly from a year or two in the American Hockey League. He needs to focus on the defensive aspects of the game if he wants to crack an NHL lineup in the next few years, but he has the potential to be a solid third-line center that also kills penalties.
