Observations:
March 2013 – He has continued at a similar pace as at the start of the season, currently at 22 points in 59 games. He has seen a call up due to injuries, but was limited to minor minutes and the press box. The Canes really like his size. He needs to work on chipping in more consistently and should be more developed after an extended stay in the NCAA. Jason Banks
November 2012 – Welsh signed a full two-year contact in the summer. He has struggled with only six points in 17 games for the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. Jason Banks
August, 2012 – Welsh was barely noticed his first two seasons at Union, then really broke out in his junior season, scoring 27 goals in 40 games. The large pivot showed off a powerful, accurate shot and a consistent, determined effort that caught the attention of NHL scouts. Welsh signed with Carolina after leading Union to the Frozen Four and the Hurricanes dressed him for a game to give the 24-year-old a taste. He has a good chance to crack the Carolina lineup this fall.
Welsh won’t ever content for the Art Ross Trophy, but he could be a useful secondary scorer.
