April 2013- Alex followed up his 33 point Freshman season with 36 points in his sophomore season, doing so in three fewer games. But it wasn't without it's share of trials. After amassing eleven points in the first 15 games, Guptill was benched for three weeks by coach Red Berenson over questions about his work ethic and practice habits. After returning to the lineup Guptill struggled, before catching fire and putting up 19 points in the final eleven games of the season. July, 2012 – Guptill enjoyed a successful transition from junior to college hockey, tying for the team scoring lead at Michigan with 33 points. He has excellent size and skates well for a big man, and plays with an edge. He has good offensive instincts and battles hard, but will need show a little more interest in playing defense once he turns pro. Guptill was named CCHA Rookie of the Year.
Good offensive potential, Guptill will almost certainly not use all of his college eligibility before turning pro.
