Alexander Urbom, D

Born: 1993-04-11

Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden

Drafted: 2009 by New Jersey Devils, 73rd overall

December 2013 – Urbom is enjoying life as a reserve defenceman for Washington after being claimed on waivers early this season. He is quietly playing well when he does get in seeing a limited 14 minutes per night. His size is excellent and has some upside, but he seems to be finding that the shutdown role is what will keep him employed. If he ever jumps into the regular 18 minute per game mark, he could post numbers warranting himself as a short term pickup for fantasy leagues for managers in need. Jason Banks

April 2013 - Alexander Urbom played in 68 regular season games for the Albany registering eight assists. The big stay-at-home defenseman hasn't really shown anything to get excited about from a fantasy standpoint and it appears going forward that his potential at the NHL level is as a depth defenseman (number 6/7). Brendan Ross

April, 2012 –During multiple stints from Albany, Alexander Urbom has shown that he can be relied upon. Before crossing the pond, Urbom was more of a shutdown defender that relied mainly on his positioning and skating skills. After a sparkling transition to the North American game, the offensive has since evolved. Urbom is a big kid who owns a good first pass and above-average shooting skills. Lou Lamoriello, the GM of the Devils, is big fan of Urbom and expects him to be in the show full time very soon. Markus Kniehl

Fantasy Outlook: D-

No fantasy relevance at this point as Urbom has molded himself into a defensive defenseman that looks like he will only be servicable in a depth role or spot duty.

... In the end Gelinas and Urbom will probably be similar in terms of their output. Gelinas might have a bit more offensive skill but Urbom is ahead in his development and will get a better opportunity.

I will hopefully do a profile for Gelinas over the weekend.
