March 2013 - Spent much of the season in the ECHL thanks to the lockout and responded exactly how we would like him to respond - with 25 points in 23 games. Now back in the AHL, McFarland is gaining experience on a depth line. He is several years away, thanks to Florida's incredible depth up front. - Dobber
March 2012 – Over a year before the 2010 draft, John McFarland was considered one of the biggest talents to be had, however his stock dropped tremendously eventually leading him to be picked early in the second round. McFarland is a talented skater with a quick shot, yet he never has been able to live up to the lofty expectations he once had. Prior to the 2010 draft McFarland was compared to Brenden Morrow by the Director of NHL Central Scouting but now that comparison seems far too optimistic. After four seasons with three teams in the OHL, McFarland has not shown significant improvement and has been surpassed on the Florida depth chart by several prospects. - Thomas Wall
McFarland is now behind Huberdeau, Bjugstad, Howden, and Shore among Florida’s top prospects. McFarland must work to improve his offensive game if he is to play in the NHL.
