Observations:

February 2014 - Since being traded by Owen Sound last month in exchange for forward Kyle Platzer and defenseman Santino Centorame, Smith's elite offensive production only continued with the London Knights as he rides a six-game point streak heading into Feb. 7th's contest against his former team. Beginning the campaign in London registering just one assist and a minus-four rating through his first five games, the change of scenery appeared to take some getting used to after leading the Attack in all major scoring categories through his previous 40 OHL games this season. “It was really tough because they (the Knights) play a totally different style," Smith told The London Free Press, ”In Owen Sound, it was kind of a robotic game — the same thing (all the time). But now, I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable and gelling more with linemates." Acquired by the Knights to improve their MasterCard Memorial Cup chances in May, the 19-year old has since scored two goals and dished out seven assists in his last five games as he welcomes the Attack into London. Serving all three and a half seasons in the OHL with Owen Sound, he tallied 176 points (78 goals, 98 assists) in 235 career games with the Attack, including 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 38 playoff appearances. “In terms of emotion,” Smith said, “it’s just another game. That’s the way I’m looking at it.” Recording 11 points in now 11 games since becoming a Knight, he currently ranks second on the team in goals (29) and third in points scored (59) through 51 OHL games this season. Clayton Bailey

January 2014 - Smith led the Owen Sound Attack (OHL) in goals (26), assists (22) and points (48) before being traded to the London Knights on Jan. 8. The 19-year-old joins the London Knights as the team's leading goal-scorer, ranking third in points behind forwards Max Domi (61) and Chris Tierney (60). In 235 career games, he has tallied 176 points (78 goals, 98 assists) over four seasons and was a rookie during the Attack's 2011 OHL Championship season. "We have watched Gemel grow from a boy to a young man over the past four seasons and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," said Attack GM Dale DeGray. The Toronto native will get the opportunity to appear in his second MasterCard Memorial Cup as the Knights will host in 2014. Clayton Bailey

January 2014 - Smith continues to be the offensive focal point on the Owen Sound Attack (OHL). While tallying 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in his last seven games, it was the fifth time this season in which he recorded three or more points in a game. Through 40 games this season, the 19-year old ranks 6th in the OHL in goal scoring (26) and among the league's Top 20 in points scored (48). Heading towards Friday, January 10th OHL Trade Deadline, Gemel Smith is a player who could find himself on a new team looking to add some offensive punch. Clayton Bailey

April 2013 – Drafted 104th overall in 2012, Gemel Smith is a speedy undersized scorer who plays for the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Smith was the winner of the fastest skater at the 2012 CHL NHL Top Prospects Game. Responsible in all three zones, Gemel Smith is an intelligent forward who plays big minutes in all situations. He packs a very good shooting arsenal and rarely misses a scoring chance. Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: B -

Using his speed and hockey IQ to get into open scoring areas, Smith is also a superb playmaker with tremendous vision on the ice. Assuming his physical and defensive attributes improve during junior development, the 19-year old has the ceiling to become a quality second line center in the NHL in the coming years ahead.
