Observations:

May, 2013 – Mark Cundari is now in the Calgary Flame’s system after being dealt to them (along with goalie Reto Berra and a first

round pick) from the St. Louis Blues for Jay Bouwmeester. Possibly due to his small stature, Cundari was not drafted and was instead signed by the Blues after attending both their development camp and training camp in 2008. He returned to the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL for two more seasons, winning both the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup each year.

While he is small for an NHL defenceman, Cundari is not shy about contact, averaging 138 penalty minutes and 62 games per season in his OHL career. He also has a solid skill set, as he displayed in the  2009-10 season in Windsor, putting up 8 goals and 54 points in 63 games. He was the ninth highest scoring defenseman in the OHL that year, and had the best plus/minus in the league (+45), playing on a loaded Spitfire team that included Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique, Ryan Ellis and Cam Fowler.

Cundari is a solid two way defenseman that plays a consistent positional game and occasionally contributes offensively. He is also versatile, playing forward at times for Peoria, the St. Louis Blues’ farm team. He enjoyed a sensational debut in his first game in Calgary, scoring a goal and an assist, and ended up with 3 points in his 4 games with the Flames. Sheldon Curtis

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Cundari is with an organization that lacks talent and depth, and while many thought he was simply an upgrade for their farm team, Cundari may have a legitimate shot at making the team next year. Because of his size and average AHL statistics though, he appears to be more likely to become the first call up when a Flame’s defenseman is out of the lineup.
